BOOK REVIEW :: BY CARRIE ROLLWAGEN
If you like punk rock, or if you’re one of those girls who wears a Ramones shirt around like in Chapter Fourteen, please please read this book. Or, you know, stop wearing that shirt.
The narrative is told by people who were actually in bands or involved in the scene somehow. Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain piece together all these bits of interviews and articles to make more than a coherent story. They make magic. Seriously, a lot of this text flows so well from narrator to narrator and paragraph to paragraph that you’d think it’s fiction. The fact that it isn’t makes it all the more impressive.
Sometimes punk rock is authentic, sometimes political, sometimes dangerous, sometimes just silly and goofy. The book is the same. It’s amazing and fun to read. Plus, it gave me insane lucid dreams, which seems pretty punk to me.
